Large volcanic eruptions are the most important natural cause of climate change on seasonal to interdecadal timescales. This talk will review how gases and aerosols emitted by volcanic eruptions produce radiative and dynamical responses in the climate system. An important source of information about stratospheric aerosols is lidar observations, and how lidar observations are used to produce stratospheric aerosol data sets will be discussed. The climate response to these aerosols, both from observations and model simulations, will also be examined.
