Aerosol extinction coefficients is the most common and useful parameter to characterize the aerosol optical features, but lidar measurement principle is based on sensing the aerosol backscattered coefficients. Mie scattering theory provides the theoretical and analytical framework to convert backscattering to extinction coefficients, but the analytical solution is only possible for very few particular cases. Combining empirical and theoretical information is possible to determine sets of conversion coefficients. The state of the art of the research in this subject will be discussed.
